Custom Ortho-Corrected Aerial Photography
Inventory foresters need to regularly update timber type basemaps to reflect recent harvest activity and road construction. In many cases companies will send foresters out in the field with a GPS unit to do the job. This approach is time consuming, requires post-processing, and only results in line theme information. A much better solution is to fly the units with low elevation orthophotography. Coastline Forestry Consultants works with Eagle Images, based out of Corvallis, Oregon, to assist land owners in acquiring custom digital orthophotos. Eagle Images has fully automated their process to the point where they can deliver custom digital orthophotos for about the same cost as regular black and white prints.
The advantages are obvious:
- The images are fully orthocorrected so you can immediately display them onto your GIS and they will line up with your basemap.
- The end result is more than just the line themes that you get from a GPS. The images produced contain all the additional information that aerial photos provide.
- Turnaround time is very quick. Eagle Images can usually fly an entire year's worth of harvest units in one day.
